The industry visit conducted by the Directorate of Innovation for Sustainable Development of the Science and Technology Park (DIT.IPBKST) at the University of North Sumatra to PT. AKAR RIMBA represents a concrete step toward integrating science, technology, and sustainable practices in the fisheries sector. This activity focused on organic snakehead fish farming combined with an Internet of Things (IoT)-based water quality management system.

DITIPBKST USU's Industrial Visit to PT.AKAR RIMBA: Organic Snakehead Fish Farming with IOT-Based Water Management

The industry visit conducted by the Directorate of Innovation for Sustainable Development of the Science and Technology Park (DIT.IPBKST) at the University of North Sumatra to PT. AKAR RIMBA represents a concrete step toward integrating science, technology, and sustainable practices in the fisheries sector.

This activity focused on exploring organic snakehead fish farming combined with an Internet of Things (IoT)-based water management system, an innovation considered strategic in addressing food security challenges while preserving the environment.

During the visit, dit,ipbkst.usu received a firsthand demonstration of the organic snakehead fish farming process, which relies entirely on natural methods without the use of synthetic chemicals. This system emphasizes maintaining a naturally preserved farming environment, resulting in healthier, safer, and higher-value fishery products. Additionally, this approach is also considered capable of enhancing the competitiveness of local commodities amid growing public awareness of sustainable food consumption.

One of the key aspects of focus in this initiative is the application of IoT technology in water quality management. PT Akar Rimba has developed a monitoring system capable of measuring critical parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, and water turbidity in real-time. The data obtained is then processed to support faster and more accurate decision-making in maintaining optimal conditions for snakehead fish growth. The integration of this technology not only improves operational efficiency but also minimizes the risk of production failures due to undetected environmental changes.

This initiative is closely linked to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the context of SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), organic snakehead fish farming contributes to providing a high-quality local source of protein, thereby supporting efforts to enhance national food security. Nutrient-rich snakehead fish products also hold great potential for meeting community nutritional needs, particularly in regions still facing food access challenges.

Additionally, this environmentally friendly farming practice supports SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by maintaining the balance of aquatic ecosystems through the reduction of chemical waste and more responsible water resource management. The organic approach applied helps reduce pollution and preserve the sustainability of aquatic habitats, thereby creating a positive long-term impact.

The use of IoT technology in aquaculture systems is also aligned with SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). This innovation demonstrates how the fisheries sector can transform through the adoption of digital technology to improve productivity and efficiency. Furthermore, this integrated water management system, equipped with smart technology, contributes to SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by enabling more efficient, controlled, and sustainable use of water resources.

This industry visit is expected to serve not only as a practical learning opportunity for DIT IPBKST USU, but also to open up opportunities for collaboration between academia and industry in developing innovations that have a tangible impact. This synergy is key to creating a food production system that is not only productive, but also sustainable and future-oriented.

Through this initiative, DIT IPBKST USU demonstrates its commitment to supporting the development of appropriate technology in the fisheries sector, while actively contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals in Indonesia.
