The Directorate of Innovation, Sustainable Development, and Science and Technology Park (IPBKST) of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) visited the USU Faculty of Vocational Studies to strengthen synergy and enhance the academic community’s understanding of intellectual property, research downstreaming, and opportunities for innovation development and funding.

USU Directorate of IPBKST Visits the Faculty of Vocational Studies

This activity forms part of the USU Directorate of IPBKST’s efforts to bring innovation services and information closer to faculties across the university. Through this visit, members of the academic community, particularly young lecturers, were given the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how research outcomes, ideas, and innovative works can be further developed so that they do not stop at the research stage, but instead have the potential to be protected, utilized, and transformed into value-added products or technologies.

During the outreach session, Imam Bagus Sumantri, S.Farm., M.Si., Apt., and Dr. Ir. Rahmi Meilina Sari, S.T., M.M.(T). served as speakers, presenting information on intellectual property, the downstreaming of research and innovation outcomes, opportunities for innovation development and funding at Universitas Sumatera Utara, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Discussion on intellectual property was one of the key components of the activity. Members of the academic community were encouraged to gain a greater understanding that research outcomes and innovative works have the potential to receive intellectual property protection according to the characteristics and form of each innovation. Such protection is a strategic step in safeguarding the value and sustainability of an innovation while also opening broader opportunities for its utilization and further development.

In addition to intellectual property protection, the activity also emphasized the importance of research and innovation downstreaming. Downstreaming is an essential process for bridging research outcomes with real-world needs in society and industry. Through a well-directed downstreaming process, research outcomes can be developed into products, services, technologies, or solutions that offer both practical and economic value.

In their presentations, Mr. Imam Bagus and Dr. Rahmi also provided insights into innovation development opportunities and various forms of support and funding available to the academic community. This information is expected to encourage lecturers and researchers at the Faculty of Vocational Studies to take a more active role in developing research outcomes with innovative potential and preparing them to participate in available development and funding programs.

The Faculty of Vocational Studies has significant potential to generate applied innovations that are closely connected to the needs of the workforce and industry. Therefore, strengthening understanding of intellectual property and research downstreaming is essential to ensure that the work produced by members of the academic community can be managed more systematically and directed toward further development and utilization.

The visit also provided a forum for discussion between the USU Directorate of IPBKST and the academic community of the Faculty of Vocational Studies to explore innovation potential that can be further developed. Through increasingly intensive communication and coordination, the processes of identifying, protecting, developing, and downstreaming innovations across USU are expected to become more effective and optimal.

The synergy between the USU Directorate of IPBKST and the Faculty of Vocational Studies is expected to generate more innovations that not only hold academic value but also provide tangible benefits to society, respond to industry needs, and have the potential to be developed into value-added products or technologies.

This activity represents a concrete step toward building a stronger, more collaborative, and impact-oriented innovation ecosystem at Universitas Sumatera Utara. By strengthening intellectual property protection, research downstreaming, and access to development and funding opportunities, USU continues to encourage its academic community to produce work that makes tangible contributions to development and supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Through outreach activities and faculty visits such as this, the USU Directorate of IPBKST remains committed to strengthening mentoring and collaboration with faculties in developing their research and innovation potential. It is hoped that an increasing number of innovative works produced by USU’s academic community will receive legal protection, be developed sustainably, and ultimately generate positive impacts for society and industry.
